How Do You Know If the Timing Belt Is Bad?

A bad timing belt shows itself in four ways: a rubbery ticking or slapping from behind the front engine cover; a rough run or a crank-no-start with a P0016 crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation code stored; cracks at the base of the teeth, frayed edges, a glazed shine or missing teeth once the upper cover is off; and oil or coolant soaking the rubber. Many belts produce none of those signals before they break, which is why manufacturers schedule the replacement by mileage and by calendar instead of by symptom.

The part an owner can act on gets decided earlier, on paper: belt or chain, interference or not, and which interval applies.

Three facts settle the question before the belt makes a sound

Establish them in this order; each one changes what the later evidence is worth.

  1. Open the vehicle's maintenance schedule and look for a timing belt entry. A belt appears as a scheduled replacement item with a mileage figure and usually a month figure. A chain carries none, so its absence answers the question for most engines.
  2. Run the exact engine code through a timing belt catalog. Gates' application lookup returns a T-number or TCK kit number for belt-driven engines and nothing for chain-driven ones.
  3. Find out whether the engine is an interference design. The list published by aa1car, compiled from Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association and Gates Corporation data, carries its own caveat: "This list is not all inclusive. But if your engine is listed below, it IS an interference engine with a timing belt." Gates' guide flags them with an asterisk and warns others may exist unmarked.
  4. Date the last replacement. Miles driven and months elapsed both count, and on a low-mileage car the calendar limit expires first.

The under-hood shortcut still works on most engines. A plastic or fiber cover on the front means a dry belt; a sealed metal case means a chain running in oil. Wet-belt engines defeat it, since Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost and the PSA 1.2 PureTech run a rubber belt inside the crankcase. Battery-electric drivetrains drop the component altogether; hybrids do not, because the combustion half keeps a timing drive of its own.

What a bad timing belt sounds like

Jeffrey Cox, president of the Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association and an ASE Master Certified Technician with 25 years in the industry, describes the audible set as "a ticking, squealing, or grinding noise," and puts the share of timing belt failures caused by lack of maintenance at roughly 90 percent.

Those noises have different addresses. A steady tick that keeps time with engine speed and comes from the cover area points at the belt, usually rounded or missing teeth striking the sprockets. A squeal or a whine that climbs with revs is more often a bearing in an idler pulley or the tensioner, which sit in the same cover.

Timing belt noise when accelerating has a specific test. The pitch should track engine speed rather than road speed, and a rattle that arrives when the throttle opens but stays away while coasting at the same revs points at a tensioner losing its damping under load.

One noise excludes the belt. A rattle heard only in the first seconds after a cold start, fading as oil pressure builds, is a chain signature, since the chain tensioner is hydraulic. Dry belts do not do that.

What a worn timing belt looks like once the cover is off

"Look for cracks, fraying, or shiny spots, which may indicate excessive wear," Cox writes, adding missing teeth to the list. Location matters more than quantity. Cracks at the base of the teeth condemn a belt; fine surface cracking on the smooth back is a lesser finding. A glazed, polished shine indicates heat or slipping, since healthy belt rubber is dull and slightly textured. Rounded tooth edges rather than crisp square ones raise the odds of the belt jumping.

Contamination removes the judgement call. Toyota's repair manual for the 1MZ-FE and 3MZ-FE V6 states it flatly: "If there is a trace of water and/or oil on the timing belt, repair the leakage and install a new timing belt."

Getting a look costs something. Belts are enclosed, so an inspection means removing the upper cover, roughly 30 to 60 minutes of labor, though many covers carry an inspection plug that exposes one section for almost nothing. Rotating the crankshaft by hand brings the rest into view.

The evidence runs one way. Photographs of worn belts show what condemns one; none clears one, because the tensile cords carrying the load sit inside the rubber and lose strength with age and heat cycles without marking the surface. Toyota's manual treats a used belt as reusable once the technician confirms four installation marks on it, a reinstallation procedure rather than a verdict on remaining life.

Bad timing belt tensioner symptoms, and the spec that settles them

The tensioner has a published number to check against. Toyota's manual for the 1MZ-FE sets the hydraulic tensioner's pushrod protrusion at 10.0 to 10.8 mm (0.394 to 0.425 in) and directs replacement when the measurement falls outside that band. Certain Lexus applications of the same family carry 10.5 to 11.5 mm, so the book for the exact engine governs. Two pass-fail checks come with it: replace the unit if the seal shows leakage, and replace it if the pushrod moves when pressed hard against a solid surface with the rod facing upward.

Fastener values from the same procedure show the assembly's tolerances. The tensioner bolts torque to 27 N·m (280 kgf·cm, 20 ft·lbf), the crankshaft pulley bolt to 220 N·m (162 ft·lbf), and the plastic timing covers to 8.5 N·m, about 75 in·lbf. An overtightened cover screw is a common source of a new rattle after service.

Gates has promoted replacing belt, tensioner and idlers together for years, and manufacturers now include the tensioner in service recommendations. The labor to reach one is the labor to reach all three.

The trouble code that means the belt has already moved

P0016 sets when the engine controller finds the camshaft and crankshaft signals out of their expected relationship. General Motors' service information for one LS-family calibration states the threshold precisely: the ECM detects that the camshaft position sensor pulses occur more than 11 crank degrees before, or 11 crank degrees after, nominal position, for 24 out of 30 engine cycles. The threshold is calibration-specific, and the 24-of-30 counter explains why a mistimed engine runs for a while before the light appears.

Eleven degrees is narrow next to one tooth. Continental's ContiTech catalogue lists the CT1028 belt at 120 teeth, 30 mm wide, on a 9.525 mm tooth pitch for VW Golf, Polo and Touran applications, and the CT1015 at 207 teeth; the Gates TCK328N kit for Subaru's EJ engines uses a 281-tooth belt 29 mm wide. Slipping a single tooth on any of them puts cam timing far outside an 11-degree window.

A stored P0016 alongside a rough or absent start is treated as mechanical timing until proven otherwise. GM's own diagnostic sends the technician to verify the sprocket marks with the cam cover off before condemning a sensor, and the sprocket marks rather than the marks printed on a new belt are the reference. Repeated cranking on a jumped belt turns a belt job into cylinder head work.

The sources do not agree. Gates instructs replacement at the listed interval or every 72 months, whichever comes first, a full year shorter than Honda's seven-year figure for the same engines, and describes its published mileage numbers as the OE recommendations for the maximum mileage of the drive. Toyota's language on the 1MZ-FE is softer than either: the company calls its belts very reliable, notes the original may last the life of the engine, and presents the 90,000-mile change as something an owner may do for peace of mind. Three positions, from three parties with different exposure to the outcome.

What the job costs, and why published estimates disagree

Kelley Blue Book puts timing belt replacement at $367 to $585. RepairPal estimates labor at $589 to $865 and parts at $300 to $426, and states the figure excludes taxes, fees and location-specific factors. ConsumerAffairs lands at $887 to $1,302 in total. AutoZone quotes the kit at $100 to $350 with three to five hours of labor, for $400 to $1,000.

Those ranges measure different jobs. The low end is a belt on its own. The high end is a kit with water pump, tensioner, idler pulleys, seals and fresh coolant, on a car where the accessory drive and an engine mount come out first. AutoZone notes the water pump adds under an hour of labor when the cover is already off, which is why the parts line moves more than the labor line between quotes. Compare estimates by scope and billed hours rather than by total.

The failure side sets the stakes. The AERA and Gates data describe a broken belt on an interference engine as producing "one or more bent valves (usually intake valves), and possibly a broken piston," damage that "can cost several thousand dollars to repair." Current 2026 shop estimates for a head repair with bent valves cluster between $2,500 and $4,000, rising when the head itself or a piston needs replacing. Wet-belt failures on the Ford 1.0-litre have run past $4,000 installed.

Belt, chain, and wet-belt failures do not look alike

Chains carry no replacement interval and fail by stretching. The stretch produces the cold-start rattle described above and eventually sets the same P0016 code a slipped belt sets, so the code reports a timing fault without saying which drive produced it. A chain usually announces itself for months; a dry belt frequently gives nothing at all.

Wet belts are their own category, and the federal data is specific. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened a preliminary evaluation into timing belt failures in Ford's 1.0-litre engines on December 18, 2025, and upgraded it to Engineering Analysis EA26004 at the end of July 2026, covering 135,551 Ford Focus, Fiesta and EcoSport vehicles. ODI counted 355 reported incidents, an average failure mileage near 70,000 miles, and 98 percent of failures occurring before the 150,000-mile replacement interval, including on vehicles with documented oil maintenance.

The mechanism explains why the symptom list changes. Belt material degrades and sheds debris into the oil, the debris clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, oil pressure drops, and the engine loses power. The screen is not serviceable, so debris cannot be removed without pulling the engine, and NHTSA concluded the defect presents an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. Ford revised the interval to 100,000 miles or six years in June 2026 and opened a customer satisfaction program, which is not a recall.

On a wet-belt engine the first signal is a low oil pressure warning lamp rather than a noise from the cover. Running the dry-belt checklist there watches the wrong channel.
