Can Cats Have Salmon? How Long That Answer Stays True

Yes. A cat can have plain cooked salmon with no salt, oil, or seasoning, as an occasional treat capped at about 10% of daily calories. For the reference animal in the National Research Council's feeding guide — a 9-pound adult cat eating 250 calories a day — that ceiling is 25 calories, and USDA FoodData Central puts cooked farmed Atlantic salmon at 206 calories per 100 grams. The portion works out to roughly 12 grams, under half an ounce. The answer stops holding the moment the salmon changes form. USDA lists regular lox at 2,000 mg of sodium per 100 grams against 61 mg for that plain cooked fillet, and the NRC puts the same cat's entire daily sodium allowance at 42 mg. Same fish. Different food.

The salmon's history matters more than the salmon

I spent thirteen years at a remake desk in an orthodontic lab, working out what had happened to appliances that came back wrong. A retainer would arrive cloudy and twisted, and the plastic told me nothing. The answer lived in the paperwork: the remake ticket, the mold number, the heat-exposure note. Early on I blamed bad material for a warped return, then asked the family how they cleaned it and learned about the hot tap.

Salmon behaves the same way. The fillet on your plate and the slices on your bagel are both salmon, and neither carries a visible record of what it went through. Brine, smoke, a retort, a pan of butter and garlic. Those histories produce different risks, and the fish looks like fish through all of them.

The question worth asking is which salmon, prepared how, how often, and instead of what.

How much plain cooked salmon a cat can have

The 2021 AAHA Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines set the frame: the complete and balanced diet should be at least 90% of what a pet eats, treats and everything else 10% or under. Cornell's Feline Health Center phrases it as a rule of thumb, "not to let treats exceed 10 to 15 percent of a cat's daily caloric intake."

The NRC's pocket guide gives daily energy needs for lean domestic cats: 170 calories at 5 pounds, 280 at 10, 360 at 15, 440 at 20. Run the 10% line through those against USDA's 206 calories per 100 grams of cooked farmed Atlantic salmon:

Twelve grams is less than most people picture, and it is a ceiling for everything outside the bowl combined. The reason it exists sits plainly in the NRC guide: "Pet foods marketed as 'snacks' are not required to have nutritional adequacy labels." Salmon is muscle meat. Excellent protein, and not a formulation.

Cooking salmon for a cat, step by step

The FDA Food Code sets the cooking target for fish at 63°C (145°F) or above for 15 seconds. That threshold was written for people, and the pathogens behind it do not care whose plate the fish lands on.

  1. Start with a plain fillet. Not pre-marinated, brined, smoked, or packed in brine or oil.
  2. Take off the skin and check for pin bones. Run a thumb down the centre of the fillet; they sit in a row.
  3. Cook it dry. Bake, steam, or poach in water. No butter, oil, salt, garlic, or onion in any form.
  4. Hit 63°C (145°F) for 15 seconds, measured at the thickest part with a thermometer rather than judged by colour.
  5. Cool and flake it, checking again for bone fragments.
  6. Weigh the portion and take the equivalent calories out of that day's regular food.

The weighing step is the one people skip. It is the only one keeping this at 10%.

Raw salmon, and the thiaminase claim that gets it backwards

The most repeated warning is that raw salmon contains thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1, making every raw bite a neurological emergency. The literature says something narrower.

Thiaminase was traced in the 1930s and 1940s through Chastek paralysis, a disease of farmed silver foxes fed raw fish. Charles F. Lee's 1948 review "Thiaminase in Fishery Products," in Commercial Fisheries Review, gathers that era's species testing. Deutsch and Hasler found the enzyme in carp, goldfish, smelt, and suckers in 1943, in none of the nine marine species they tested. Melnick and colleagues, in 1945, found small amounts in marinated herring and, in the review's words, "none in oysters, smoked carp, or salmon." Smith and Proutt fed cats nothing but raw fish in 1944 and produced deficiency with carp and herring; perch, catfish, and butterfish gave negative results. Two conditions carried those cases: a single raw species, and the whole diet.

Modern work has not overturned that. Rowland and colleagues compiled thiaminase data for 300 fishes in Scientific Reports in 2023 and found ecology, not ancestry, predicts the enzyme. Salmon appear on the receiving end, developing M74 deficiency syndrome from eating thiaminase-bearing herring and sprat.

None of that makes raw salmon a good idea. It moves the reason. Cats are unusually exposed to thiamine problems: the veterinary review by Kritikos and colleagues cites NRC allowances of 5.6 mg/kg of diet for cats against 2.25 for dogs. The NRC pegs the reference cat at 0.33 mg daily, and twelve grams of cooked salmon supplies about 0.04 mg. A contribution, not a threat, and not a supply.

The real reasons to cook it are ordinary food safety. FDA's Food Code requires fish served raw to be frozen at −20°C (−4°F) or below for at least 168 hours, or at −35°C (−31°F) until solid and then held 15 hours. Farmed salmon raised on formulated feed with no live parasites is exempt. Whether a given fillet met the standard is a record the supplier keeps for 90 calendar days under the Code. It is not something the fish shows you. That is the remake ticket problem again.

FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine tested 196 raw pet food samples and found 15 positive for Salmonella, 32 for Listeria monocytogenes.

One fear you can set down. Salmon poisoning disease, caused by Neorickettsia helminthoeca riding in the fluke Nanophyetus salmincola, is a canid illness. Washington State University's veterinary hospital calls it "seen in only dogs." Cats are not susceptible.

Skin, bones, and the questions people ask last

Salmon skin is not toxic. Plain, cooked, unseasoned, and cut small, it is edible. The catch is that skin holds the fat and absorbs whatever was in the pan, so skin off your own fillet is rarely plain.

Bones split in two. Pin bones in a cooked fillet stay sharp and rigid, a choking and perforation risk worth removing by hand. The soft bones in canned salmon are a different object: the retort that sterilises the can also softens them. They arrive attached to the can's sodium.

Salt changes the answer faster than anything else

USDA gives 61 mg of sodium per 100 grams for cooked farmed Atlantic salmon. Canned pink salmon, drained, comes in at 381 mg. Regular lox sits at 2,000 mg.

Against the NRC's 42 mg daily sodium allowance for a 9-pound cat, a 12-gram portion of each delivers about 7 mg, 46 mg, and 240 mg. The fillet uses a sixth of the day's allowance. The canned salmon uses all of it. The lox, six times it, in a piece the size of a stamp.

Healthy cats with normal kidneys handle sodium above the allowance without drama, and one stolen lick of lox is not an emergency. The point is that "salmon" stopped being one variable somewhere in that list.

Salmon or tuna: what actually separates them

Taste is not the difference. Routine exposure is. FDA's mercury monitoring data, covering 1990 to 2012, and USDA's composition data line the two fish up like this:

At a 12-gram portion, fresh salmon carries about 0.26 micrograms of mercury; canned albacore carries about 4.2, sixteen times as much. FDA's level of concern for commercial fish is 1.0 ppm, some 45 times the salmon mean, and the agency places salmon and canned light tuna in Best Choices, albacore and yellowfin in Good Choices, bigeye in Choices to Avoid.

Two cautions. That advice was written for pregnant people and children, not for cats; it ranks species reliably and doses nothing. And these are means with real spread, the recorded maximum for fresh and frozen tuna being 1.816 ppm against 0.19 for salmon.

Salmon is the lower-contaminant choice. Both fish share the same disqualifying problem in their convenient forms: the salt in the can.

When the "yes" expires

Three clocks run on that opening answer.

The form clock is instant. The moment plain cooked flesh becomes smoked, brined, canned, or cooked in something, the sodium arithmetic above replaces the answer you had. Nothing gradual happens.

The frequency clock runs daily. Salmon every day is not a poison question, it is a displacement question: each treat calorie pushes out a calorie formulated to hit a full nutrient profile. Cats also fix hard on textures they meet often, which turns a nightly habit into a bowl they refuse next month.

The evidence clock is the slow one, and it is why I keep dates on things. FDA's mercury table covers samples from 1990 to 2012. The NRC pocket guide is from 2006. The testing that cleared salmon of thiaminase was published in 1945 and reviewed in 1948. These are the best available records, and they are records: a date at the top, a scope statement underneath. When one is revised, part of this article expires, and nobody will tell the reader who found it in a search.

Signs that mean a call to the vet, not another search

Thiamine deficiency in cats shows up first as vague trouble: appetite loss, weight loss, less movement. The NRC lists the neurological end as altered reflexes, convulsive seizures, and heart-rate disorders. The posture veterinarians watch for is ventral neck flexion, the head held tucked toward the chest.

Cornell's Feline Health Center notes that "some cats that have consumed canned fish products meant for humans have developed potentially serious neurological disorders." Wobbling, seizures, or a head-tuck in a cat eating a fish-heavy diet is a same-day call. Injected thiamine reverses it quickly when it has not gone too far.
